About the Fly fishing area of Rio Pico
In the Río Pico area you find Pacific trouts and salmons, a rural background and more. It is located in the province of Chubut, 250 km South of Esquel, offering you the possibility of fishing in a virgin landscape and capturing surprisingly large pieces of outstanding quality.
Nilson River is a typical mountain river, with meanders, big wells and fallen trees swept up by the current. It is an ideal spot to fish with light 4 or 5 equipment, using dry flies as Humpys, Royal Coachman, Wullfs or nymphs as Prince, Pheasant tail and caddis larvae in 10 to 16 hooks. There are plenty brown and rainbow trouts weighing 2 kilos average.
As the Pico River flows into the Pacific, there are a lot of salmons as well as good brown and rainbow trouts. This is a river that changes its physiognomy on its way to the ocean, it starts off as a slow plain river to become a rocky one flowing between mountains. In its confluence with Nilson River, fishing with equipment of 5 and 6, with floating lines and shootings gets good results. With dark and dry nymphs, caddies imitation in 10 to 16 hooks or black and brown wolly buggers tied over 6 to 12 hooks make for really dynamic fishing.
To capture the Pacific salmons, you will need, at least, an 8 equipment, shootings and big flies as the Andino Deceivers 2/0 and 3/0, in bright colors, and basically, you will need “luck”, because Fly Fishing is not an easy thing to do.
Another area you cannot miss is Lake 3 (Pico River), where you can catch large rainbow and brown trouts, 2 to 5 kilos average, but is common to capture pieces that widely exceed these weights. The shores of this little lake are surrounded by rushes, so using floating lines is essential, with 6 to 8 equipment, nymphs and adult dragonflies, caddis, wolly buggers, zonkers, marabou muddlers and other streamers.
The Trouts and Salmons of Pico River are waiting for you!!!!

Rods & Reels

If you prefer to travel light, then a 5-weight rod coupled with a floating line and fast sinking shooting head will be a good overall choice. Argentina is free from Whirling Disease, so please bring new equipment or disinfect your own.
