Fishing Areas
In Northern Patagonia, the quality and the wide range of wild trout offer a challenge to all the freshwater flyfishing techniques. Here you will have access to many rivers and lakes of world-class, renowned history and a beauty that will astound you. A place that stands out to satisfy the real essence of flyfishing.
We find a wide range of trout species in this Patagonian region: Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), Brown Trout (Salmo trutta), Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), and Landlocked Salmon (Salmo Salar Sebago), which were introduced at the beginning of last century and are found in a unique wild state nowadays. They all stand out for their beauty and fierceness.
The Lodge is located on the north shore of the Meliquina River and we are no more than 20 minutes from any river or lake in the area for fishing.
Rivers:
Meliquina, Caleufu, Alto Filo Hua Hum, Bajo Filo Hua Hum, Hermoso, Machico.
Spring Creeks: Culebra, Nuevo, Filo Hua Hum.
The Lakes: Meliquina, Hermoso, Raulí, Las Cármenes, Falkner, Villarino, Nuevo, Filo Hua Hum.
Fly fishing Guides
Our fly fishing guides are bilingual professional guides with high experience of the area.
Gears
We suggest taking dequate clothing for you are going to places in the mountains, warm but light sweaters and jackets for from rain and wind protection, chest high waders with felt soles, polar fleece long underwader pants, rain jackets, polarized glasses, hat, sunscreen lotion.
Fly fishing equipment
At the beginning of season (November – December) it will be necessary to use fast action sinking lines, Teeny 200 or 300 grains, with short leaders.
Rods – 7 or 8 wt. - 9 ft. or more in length. This equipment will also be necessary to use in January if you wish to fish in the surrounding lakes.
For the remainder of the season, for river fishing, we recommend 4, 5, or 6 wt. rods, intermediate and floating lines with long leaders or sinking tip lines with short leaders.
Leaders: – 9 ft – 2-4X.
Tippet: – 0-6X.
A powerful 8 or 9 wt rod for greater travel or longer casting situations.
Weather Conditions vary throughout the season. Temperatures may range anywhere from 45 to 85 F.
The flies:
We recommend for November – December:
Wooly bugger ant - hooks 2, 4 and 6
Wooly bugger – hooks 2, 4 and 6
Beech creek - 6 and 8
Little brown trout - 4, 6 and 8.
For the rest of the season:
Nymphs & dragonflies - hooks 8,10,12
Short streamers like Mickey Finn, Fuzzy Wuzzy or Matuka - hooks 6, 8, or 10
Dry flies: light Cahill, Black Gnat, American March Brown Soft hackle - hooks 10, 12, 14.
